The Le Klint 164 Softly Pleated I XL Pendant brings the brand's distinctive folding tradition to an impressive architectural scale. Designed by Philip Bro Ludvigsen, its expansive hand-pleated felt shade creates a soft, sculptural presence. Its precise folds direct useful downward light and allow a warm glow to develop across the shade.

Model 164's proportions make it especially well-suited above a large dining table or as a focal point. An acrylic top plate, a bottom diffuser, brass-finish suspension details, and a matte white canopy complete the composition with a restrained Danish character.

Softly Pleated I XL is the largest pendant in the Softly Pleated series. Its broad silhouette gives the intricate pleating room to become a defining visual feature, while the felt contributes a softer quality than a conventional rigid lampshade. The pendant was designed by Philip Bro Ludvigsen in 2025 and is produced by Le Klint in Denmark.

The XL format emphasizes both the visual and functional qualities of the Softly Pleated design. Carefully formed pleats give the shade its dimensional character, while the construction combines effective downward illumination with a softer atmospheric glow. The felt also offers natural sound absorbing qualities, adding another practical benefit when the pendant is placed above a dining or gathering area.
  • Hand pleated sculptural construction
  • Clear downward illumination
  • Warm ambient glow through the felt
  • Bottom diffuser softens the view of the light source
  • Felt provides natural sound absorbing qualities
  • Large scale design creates a strong focal point
  • Well suited above generous dining tables and in open living spaces
  • UL Certified and Labeled
Material selection plays an important role in the pendant's softer interpretation of Le Klint's folding tradition. The shade is formed from hand pleated felt, complemented by an acrylic top plate, bottom diffuser, and three point suspension with a brass finish. A matte white canopy and white silicone cord keep the overhead components visually understated. Natural variation may occur within the felt because its fibers are carded and needle felted together.

Located in Odense, Denmark, LE KLINT focuses on good craftsmanship and in-house production as branding cornerstones. World-renowned quality lighting results from techniques and traditions handed down from generation to generation, which are still carried out today by a broad team of highly skilled workers.

LE KLINT is synonymous with lampshades. Iconic, hand-folded shades take years of learning techniques and mastering many different pleating forms. Only then can a student test into certification to become part of the skilled team of Pleating Technicians. However, this is only a fraction of the procedure of each lamp. Specialist metal workers, woodworkers, and engineers play a big part in the magic of creating unique illuminated art. These tenets have gone hand-in-hand with the folding process since their genesis.

A dedicated LE KLINT team takes great pride in every aspect of the production, fitting, quality control, and shipment procedures to ensure each lamp is unique. In-house production facilities in Odense collaborate with skilled suppliers such as wood carvers, metal casters, and glass blowers, based in Denmark or internationally, with the main focus on quality as “the” guideline.
Gentle routine care helps preserve the shape and tactile surface of the felt shade. Cleaning methods should minimize moisture and friction to protect the fibers and carefully folded construction.

  • Remove loose dust gently with a soft dry brush or cloth
  • Avoid saturating the felt with water
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals
  • Handle the pleated shade carefully to help maintain its shape
  • Disconnect power before cleaning the fixture

Philip Bro Ludvigsen

Philip Bro Ludvigsen graduated from the Danish Design School in 1989 and has worked with Le Klint since the early 1990s. His work for the company explores contemporary interpretations of the folding traditions established by Kaare and Esben Klint. Among his designs for Le Klint is the Model 190 Sunflower pendant, which was later developed into ceiling and wall versions. Softly Pleated I continues this relationship between traditional folding craftsmanship and contemporary lighting design. Ludvigsen designed the Softly Pleated I series in 2025.

LE KLINT

LE KLINT is a lighting company established in 1943, but the story of the company dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when a hand pleated lamp shade was folded to fit a paraffin lamp both designed by architect and master of engineering P.V. Jensen-Klint. We have ever since maintained our original concept but we are constantly seeking to develop within modern times.
